The extraordinary genetic diversity of the HIV-1 envelope spike [Env; trimeric (gp160), cleaved to (gp120/gp41)] poses challenges for vaccine development. Envs of different clinical isolates exhibit different sensitivities to antibody-mediated neutralization.
