This study was undertaken to acquire data on Salmonella contamination of whole raw chickens, eggs, and vegetables available to consumers in Yangzhou city, China, between April 2011 and March 2012. In total, 240 chicken carcasses were tested, and the overall contamination rate for Salmonella was 33.8%. While the prevalence of Salmonella in 100 eggs and 155 vegetable samples was 7.0% and 3.2%, respectively. The 84 isolated strains were identified in 19 different serotypes with Salmonella enterica serovar Indiana (S. Indiana) (25.0%), S. Typhimurium (21.4%) and S.Enteritidis (17.9%) as the predominant serovars.
